IRWINTON, Ga. — Georgia College and State University delivered two digital pianos to Wilkinson County Elementary School Tuesday afternoon.
The piano delivery is all a part of a new outreach program by Georgia College's department of music called Bobcat Keys. The program will be run by Dr. Owen Lovell and Dr. Tina Holmes-Davis, Assistant Professors of Music at the university.
Bobcat Keys starts in August when five piano majors will get training for their careers by teaching 10 Wilkinson County Elementary School students from second to fifth grade. The students were chosen by the school district to participate in the program.
The students will get the private and group lessons at Georgia College's new piano lab, and they will practice what they learn at their own school with the digital pianos.
Four members from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.'s Georgia College chapter helped deliver the pianos to the school.
"I'm a music education major, and when he came and approached me with the idea, I was overjoyed, because this is a part of my community," said Jazmin Hunt. Hunt is a member of the sorority, and she will be a senior at the university next year.
Two additional pianos will be delivered to the elementary school at a later date. A Knight foundation grant will provide students with transportation to the school for lessons.
