Seniors find their zen with tai chi classes

Seniors at Alice's Place Adult Day Care are meditating on new ways to stay active

MACON, Ga. — It's never too late to try something new, and that's exactly what people at Alice's Place Adult Day Care are doing with their newest class: tai chi.

Tai chi is a form of Chinese martial arts that focuses on meditation and stretching.

"Tai chi is very well-known and proven to help with flexibility, building muscle coordination, as well as improving your circulation," says instructor Nicole Blount.

Blount began teaching seated tai chi to Alice's Place participants at the beginning of the year.

"We enjoy her very much," says Nicole Gaither. "It really has helped me because now I can walk better. My ankle has gotten stronger, and my back and my knees."

In addition helping with hip, back, and knee problems, the activity gives participants time to meditate and find their zen.

"It incorporates all of the pieces, not just exercise but the relaxation pieces as well as stress relief and stress reduction," says Gaither. "Just joy and good positive energy and we need a lot of good positive energy."

Alice's Place holds their tai chi class every Thursday at 11 a.m. You can find Alice's Place at 3780 Napier Avenue.
