'It's a mess': Bibb Mayor and Commissioners visit Vineville Christian Towers, company interested in buying the building

Residents say they have mold, beg bugs, and a lack of security.

MACON, Ga. — The headache is not over for people living at Vineville Christian Towers.

Mayor Robert Reichert and Macon-Bibb County commissioners visited the property on Tuesday to meet with a company interested in buying the senior-housing complex.

Louie Hargrove has lived at Vineville Christian Towers for about four years.

"Right here are bed bugs. I have killed beg bugs here," Hargrove said.

He says he is fed up with his living conditions, the lack of urgency from management, and the current owners failure to address resident concerns.

"I had to get a lawyer because the old nasty carpet has mold in it," Hargrove said.

Weston Associates, the company interested in acquiring the complex, plans to renovate it. It will cost about $14 million.

Mayor Pro Tem Al Tillman says he is focused on improving living conditions there.

"I think the main thing is to fix the issues here first before any property owner or manager tries to acquire the property," Tillman said.

Hargrove says the security gate is not consistently closed, especially on weekends. He says it makes people living there feel unsafe.

"I haven't seen security since I've been here. Then they have a book that says 'visitors please sign in'. Nobody ever signs in. They go wherever they want to go," Hargrove said.

Hargrove fears he will never see full repairs. He plans to move out.

"It's a mess. I have applied to several places trying to get a place to stay. I want out of here," Hargrove said.

About 130 people live at Vineville Christian Towers of the 196 total units.

Weston Associates has a pending application with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to buy the building.
