2020 dates to remember in Central Georgia

Here are some important dates to keep handy in your planner.

A New Year's tradition you may be following is opening up that fresh 2020 calendar book and marking down appointments, birthdays, and anniversaries. 

If you follow news in Central Georgia, here are some dates you may want to circle.

January 13 | Georgia's General Assembly begins their annual session 

Some of the issues they're likely to take up are whether or not to allow casino and sports gambling in the state, automatic voter registration for those who get or renew their driver's licenses, Governor Brian Kemp's call for cuts in state budgets, and whether or not college athletes could get paid.

February 29 | Leap Year Day

In February, the year gets longer by 24 hours. That's because we're in a leap year. It only happens once every four years, and this year it's on Saturday the 29th. If you were born on leap year day in 1980, then happy 10th birthday!

March 24 | Presidential primary

2020 is a big year for Georgia politics, and it starts to heat up on March 24. That's when Georgians vote in the state's presidential primary. Democrats will help pick a part nominee, and the Republican ballot will list just one name -- President Donald Trump.

March 27 - April 5 | Annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon

Macon's pinkest party will blossom come the end of March. It was named the best festival in the world in their budget category by by the International Festivals and Events Association.

May 19 | Local county elections

There's more politics in May. That's when most Georgia counties will hold elections. One of the top races we'll be watching that day is the race to pick a new Macon-Bibb mayor.

May 29 | Macon Bacon's third home opener

At the end of May, it's play ball. The baseball season is underway, as the Macon Bacon hold their third home opener at Luther Williams Field.

July | Warner Robins Independence Day Concert

In Warner Robins, as always, we'll hear the sounds of freedom heading into the July 4th weekend. The city of Warner Robins is scheduled to host the annual Independence Day Concert again.

August | Back to school

For most Central Georgia school kids, the fun will be all over too soon. It's back to school in early August. Houston County students board the buses on August 4, and Bibb County's first day of classes is August 10.

September 7 | Georgia Bulldogs' season starts

When school is back in session, you know football isn't far behind. The Georgia Bulldogs will be back at it on a Monday night. They'll meet the Virginia Cavaliers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

October 8-18 | Georgia National Fair in Perry

Kids of all ages can take a break for fun, food, and music at Perry's Georgia National Fair. This year's dates put it in the middle of October, and last year the fair celebrated 30 years.

November 3 | Election Day

The biggest date on the political calendar is Election Day. That's when Americans will decide this year's presidential election. Georgians will also vote on not one, but two U.S. Senate races and many other contests.

As usual, once those elections wrap up, the holidays will be here before you know it.
