24th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival

The 24th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival sprang into action Saturday afternoon.

The 24th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival sprang into action Saturday afternoon.

The sound team and vendors could be seen setting up in Tattnall Square Park earlier in the morning.

June 19, 1865 marked the end of slavery and Saturday’s celebrate was to commemorate what happened in Galveston, Texas, more than 150 years ago.

There was live music, spoken word, reenactments and more.

Vincent Muhammad, the Youth Coordinator at Torch Light Academy, says events like these are important for the community.

“A celebration of freedom. A celebration for everyone and a celebration that celebrates our history. Celebrates our present and celebrates our future,” says Muhammad, “When you come out to Juneteenth, you’re going to get great food, great music, great culture, as well as your history and a great experience overall.”

The event is sponsored by Torch Light Academy in conjunction with Kwanzaa Cultural Access Center.

According to George Fadil Muhammad, the co-organizer of the festival, one of the main headliners tonight is Macon's divine Divas of Soul.
