Abortion protesters hold rally about proposed women's health clinic

The health clinic would specialize in "low cost" health services for women.

More than 100 people gathered in downtown Macon Friday, protesting plans for a women's health clinic that would perform abortions along with other health services.

This was the second protest in the past month centered around the clinic called Summit Center PC. It would be located on Walnut Street.

The protest started in Rosa Parks Square across from the Macon-Bibb Government Center.

Many said they came with church groups from around the Macon area. They made it clear that they were not protesting the idea of the women's health clinic, just the abortion services offered.

The group moved from the square to the proposed Walnut Street location, praying and voicing their pro-life stance.

13-year-old Alex Justice said, "I feel like many people in my generation don't really advocate for anti-abortion, and I just really like the cause. I feel like abortion is murder and it's completely absurd."

The organizer of the protests says that so far they have had no counterprotesters come out and little to no negative response directed towards them on social media.

"Generally, I'm not hearing, I haven't had phone calls to the center. We've been very public about our support of the pro-life movement of not having abortion in Macon, so our goal really is for life, and apparently that isn't terribly offensive to anybody," say organizer Ann Beall.

People are protesting a proposed women's health clinic coming to downtown Macon at Rosa Parks park.

Last month, Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning approved an application for Summit Medical Center, which specializes in "low cost" women's gynecological health care services—including pap smears, ultra sounds, and abortions.

Abortion clinics need licenses from the Georgia Department of Community Health, according to Michael Hokanson of the North Central Health District.

There is no word on whether the Summit Center has received a license for the Macon site.
