Bibb residents hoping new trash contract will fix pickup problem

A new plan will give 59 cents more of your monthly bill to Advanced Disposal, but county officials are promising better results.

A new plan will give 59 cents more of your monthly bill to Advanced Disposal, but county officials are promising better results.

One man who says trash pickup is a constant problem for his family and he's hoping this new plan will change that.

Eugene Webb has a problem outside his house.

“It's aggravating, an eyesore, because I thought they would have gotten it Thursday when they picked up the other stuff,” said Webb

He says he wants to stop looking at the grimy mattress and broken children's toy outside of his home.

“I know it happened before when we put a dresser out here. It took them a lot time to get it,” says Webb.

Commissioners say they get calls from people like Webb when their trash isn’t picked up when it's supposed to be.

Commissioners say part of the problem is that county workers pick up large items like that mattress in addition to their other duties. While a private company, Advanced Disposal picks up regular trash.

That’s why they approved a change taking some responsibilities from the solid waste department and giving them to Advanced Disposal.

Solid waste department head Kevin Barkley says that’s a good thing.

“They really just want the material picked up, they really don’t care as long as they can get it collected,” said Barkley.

“ADS will be picking up the garbage carts and the recycling carts and we will be picking up the bulk materials on the ground and the other items,” says Barkley.

The proposal says the plan will take place before October 1st, but Barkley is hoping to get the new trucks and employees ready before then.

Webb says he hopes this will mean no more trash left on his curb for his younger family members.

“It just sits out here with bugs and stuff,” said Webb.

Webb says he doesn't care who picks it up as long as they do.
