Bibb Sheriff on deputy fatally shooting armed robber: ‘The deputy showed dedication and bravery'

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is handling the shooting investigation.

UPDATE: The Bibb County Sheriff's Office has identified the two deputies involved as: Deputy Christopher Williams and Deputy Christopher Scuderi.

Both deputies are on paid leave as the GBI continues its investigation.

-------

Bibb County deputies shot and killed a man after he allegedly robbed a gas station and began fighting with the officers.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, it all started Saturday night after an officer responded to an armed robbery at the Circle K off of Riverside Drive.

The sheriff’s office says 39-year-old Shamir DeAngelo Terry went inside the Circle K and approached an employee.

He allegedly pulled a handgun out, fired a shot inside of the store, took money and ran away.

According to the sheriff’s office, Terry ran next door to an Applebee's parking lot and was confronted by a Bibb County deputy who heard about the robbery from a passerby.

The two got into an altercation, but it continued as they moved back behind the restaurant to the intersection of Pierce Avenue and Sheffield Road.

Sheriff David Davis says when they got to the intersection, the deputy Tased Terry unsuccessfully and then another deputy showed up as backup.

That is when Davis says Terry pulled out a gun and moved towards the deputies.

“The deputy saw the firearm before he shot him,” said Davis.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations says both deputies shot at Terry.

“The deputy showed dedication and bravery to follow someone who he believes or reasonably believes is armed up into a darkened street,” said Davis.

According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, Terry suffered from multiple gunshots to the chest and abdomen and died at the hospital.

The sheriff’s office says neither one of the deputies were injured. They are not releasing the names of the deputies at this time.
