Bob Mathis Elementary student hit by bus, taken to hospital with leg injury: officials

The driver didn’t see the child and hit him, running over his leg over, DeKalb County police said.

DECATUR, Ga. — An elementary student is in the hospital after his leg was run over by a school bus in Decatur, according to officials with the DeKalb County Police Department. 

The DeKalb County School District said the child, who attends Bob Mathis Elementary, was hurt at a bus stop in the 3800 block of Browns Drive around 7 a.m. The school bus had about 10 students onboard.

Police said the child was struck after he ran into the street. While running, the child slipped and fell while the bus was approaching. The driver didn’t see the child and hit him, running over his leg, they said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.

The bus driver remained on scene, and police are still investigating the case. 

"The district appreciates the professional response of all first responders, medical personnel, and DCSD staff in assisting with this incident this morning," the district said.
