COCHRAN, Ga. — One longtime Bleckley County family opened Snow's Asian Grill last week in Cochran.
The restaurant serves Vietnamese egg rolls, spring rolls, egg noodles, and fried rice. They also offer hibachi options, choices for kids, and dessert.
Mi Waters co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Rick.
"We will do different specials so that we can see what people like and what people don't, and then in 10-12 months if everything is going well, then we'll revamp and add to the menu," Waters said.
Waters said they started renovating the building in mid-August, but the journey for Snow's Asian Grill started long before that.
Mi is Vietnamese. Her father served in the Army and was eventually able to bring her mom and her mom's siblings to America after the Vietnam War.
Mi was born the year after, and they chose to settle in Cochran some time after that. Her mom and dad worked at Lithonia Lighting before it shut down, with her mom, Snow, catering every now and then.
"People in town know my mamma by her egg rolls, and when I worked at school, she would also cook some for school, and people would order and she would make plates and whatnot," Mi said.
But Mi's 20-year career as a teacher ended because of an accident. She said she sustained nerve damage and wasn't able to return to the classroom.
"I never thought I wouldn't be teaching at this point in my life," she said.
Not only that, her dad also passed away around five years ago. Both Mi and her mom struggled with those things.
"When I had my accident, and my mom had a hard time dealing with my dad's death, [the restaurant] was something that has been a true blessing, that has given us both something to focus on," Mi said.
With her mom in the kitchen cooking up the same delicious egg rolls, they work together to continue her father's legacy one dish at a time.
"My dad was a hard working, very dedicated man who taught us that family and tradition and a good work ethic is the way of life," she said.
Mi said it's a dream come true for Snow. She said they love being involved in the community, and she's grateful to have the same support back.
"We have been wall-to-wall, and everybody has been so patient, so understanding, so supportive, and encouraging," she said. "It's been amazing, it really has."
