Colder months could mean more potential car troubles, here is what to look for

Del Outlaw with Del's Automotive says the check list runs from your battery to the anti freeze.

MACON, Ga. — The colder months can bring not only adjustments to your thermostat but also adjustments in your car care.

The battery is just one part of your car the cold weather may impact. Here are some of the problems spots you need to watch out for.

Former nurse Betty Ethridge knows how crucial vehicles are. In  some cases it can mean life or death.

"I was on call. Somebody's life is at stake and if your vehicle doesn't crank for whatever reason you're comprising the patient that's waiting on you," she said.

Cold weather can mean more potential problems.

"It seems in the winter that there are more problems we all need to be cognitive about, get fixed and be on the road," Ethridge said.

Del Outlaw with Del's Automotive says the check list runs from your battery to the anti freeze.

"A lot of people do it, they can't afford to put anti freeze in it and they can't afford to fix the car in and they're just pouring water in it to keep it from running hot," Outlaw said.

He says if it freezes it could cause some issues.

"By that time you have already blown a head gasket cracked, cracked a head, busted a block. Freeze plugs in there and they'll pop out," Outlaw said.

That means a few dollars saved on antifreeze turns into a big hit on your wallet.

"The wallet gets hit very hard it's more or less time for another car," Outlaw said.

Then there's that battery.

"Cold weather and extreme heat. If a battery is a weak and is on its way out that's when it says 'I'm done,'" Outlaw said. "Check your tires. Make sure your antifreeze full, gets your belts and hoses checked. Anything to prevent you from sitting on the side of the road."

As for Ethridge, she knows the importance of keeping your car prepared.

"A good car ready to go at all times, whether you're working or in an emergency is vital," she said.
