Constant rain causes flooding in Upson County

Water from the Tenmile Creek has already invaded several yards and at least one home.

As rain continues to fall and rivers continue to rise, some people in Central Georgia are concerned about flooding.

Water rushes over a dam on Tenmile Creek in Upson County, but just upstream, the water is over the banks.

“I’m actually worried, thinking we may have to relocate for a while,” LaFran Stinchcomb said.

She says after days of rain the water covered up most of the playset in her backyard with no end in sight, the rain makes her concerned for her home and her belongings.

“It just got lost down the river,” Stinchcomb said. “A lot of the kids' toys, their fishing poles, and the little toys in our backyard,” Stinchcomb said. “It was like right up behind the deck, really high, and it's actually went down some. Since it started raining again, it’ll probably be back up.”

County EMA Director Martha McCarty says the creek eventually flows into the Flint River. She says when you get five inches of rain, the water isn't going stay in its banks.

The Helms family further up the creek know that all too well. The waters already invaded their home. Wednesday morning, they had as much as eight inches in their basement.

While water hasn't penetrated the Stinchcombs' home, they're on alert and hoping for the best.

“The owners before told us it has not been flooded, so I'm just praying that that’s not going to happen,” Stinchcomb said.
