Corn maze at Lane Southern Orchards closed for the season due to hurricane damage

This year's corn maze has a Mercer University theme.

UPDATE: The corn maze at Lane Southern Orchards is now closed until next year following extensive damage from Hurricane Michael on Wednesday and Thursday.

The orchard made the announcement via Facebook on Friday afternoon, saying it will not reopen until next season. They have also canceled their Fall Festival, which was scheduled for Oct. 20.

The maze officially opened on Oct. 3, which means it was only open for a week before the hurricane hit.

ORIGINAL STORY

The corn maze at Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley opens on Wednesday.

Wendy Barton with Lane Southern Orchards says the corn maze will open at noon.

"This year we're excited to partner with Mercer University," she said. "If you saw an aerial shot of the maze, you would see their mascot Toby."

She added that they planted the corn back in June. The entire process including this years's theme started last year.

In addition to the corn maze, Lane's has lots to offer each fall.

"You can take an old-fashioned hay ride around the farm; you can play pumpkin checkers, pumpkin tic tac toe," she said. "We have a mini hay bell maze for the little kids and we also have a pumpkin patch."

Lane's also has a restaurant and a market for visitors to enjoy. "You'll find some fall items like apple butter and pumpkin butter and we actually have an apple salsa that's amazing," she said about the offerings at the market.

Lane Southern Orchards will have a huge fall festival on October 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The maze will be open Wednesdays through Fridays from noon to six.
