Crisp County police search for teen with medical condition

The community is looking for 15-year-old Shakhira Hawkins because her medical condition needs monitoring.

Police say they need the community's help to find a missing Crisp County teen. It's approaching day five since the family last saw Shakhira Hawkins. Officers with the Cordele Police Department say the time frame is dangerous because she has a medical condition that needs monitoring.

Officers and people went door to door Tuesday morning to search for the 15-year-old. Her family last saw her on Friday around 10 p.m. Curtis Smith says he knows her grandparents and joined the search party when he learned she has a medical condition.

"That made me really want to get out and get involved to try to see what's up because I know this child can only go so many hours without her insulin," said Smith.

The Crisp County Sheriff's Office took to Facebook, joining forces with the Cordele Police Department saying, "if you see something say something."

Lieutenant Andrew Roufs with the Cordele Police Department says people passed out more than 2,000 flyers with Hawkins' picture on it. He also says she missed two days of school.

"We don't have any indication any foul play has happened. Obviously, we are concerned because this is not her normal behavior and family says this has not happened before," said Lieutenant Roufs.

People posted flyers to social media that show Hawkins wearing gold-rimmed glasses. Smith says everyone is worried and he can't imagine what the family is going through.

"I know that they are highly upset and they are hurt and they are wondering, 'Where in the world could this child possibly be?'" said Smith.

Lieutenant Roufs says police were able to get some information from her phone but didn't have any strong leads. They last heard she was in the Dooly County area. Anyone with information can call the Cordele Police Department at 229-276-2690.
