FEMA comes to Crisp County to help storm victims

Sheriff Billy Hancock with the Crisp County Sheriff's office says FEMA will come to Crisp County to help storm victims.

People out in Crisp County still need help after Hurricane Michael knocked down trees and knocked out power in some areas. EMA Director and Sheriff Billy Hancock says FEMA is coming to Crisp County Thursday to help with the cleanup process.

When Joe Lawrence stands outside of his home, he says it just doesn't look the same.

"There was high wind everywhere, then we heard a pecan tree crack," said Lawrence.

Lawrence says during the storm, the noise outside was like nothing he had ever heard before.

"That pecan tree was huge. Now it's everywhere," said Lawrence.

Power lines, branches, and limbs cover the ground. Although Hurricane Michael swept through, his presence is still felt inside of Lawrence's home. Wind blew a tree through his roof, and he and many other are still without power. Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says at least 900 people have damage to their homes.

"FEMA has declared us an individual assistance declaration along with our PDA ,so I think tomorrow we will see FEMA reps going door-to-door helping people," said Sheriff Hancock.

He says they have a long road to recovery. He wants storm victims to apply for help at www.disasterassistance.gov. The process should take about 20 minutes. Lawrence says his family just applied.

"Just move forward. All of this can be replaced sooner or later," said Lawrence.
