Georgia sets new record for employed residents

The Department of Labor says nearly 5 million Georgians are working

The state of Georgia set a record for employment in April.

The Department of Labor says nearly 5 million Georgians have jobs.

For colleges like Central Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins, it’s not particularly surprising.

In the 2017 academic year, CGTC had a 99.35 placement rate in either the workforce, military, or further education opportunities.

New nursing graduate Crystal Zunino says graduation wasn't that stressful since she knew she was landing on her feet.

“Yeah it was really great to know, sitting at graduation knew that we had a job lined up. It was just worry about your boards, passing your boards, and you already have a job. So, it was really good to know that,” Zunino says.

The new graduate says she and at least 19 of her 25 classmates had jobs lined up before their ceremony.

Once she passes her boards, Zunino has a job waiting for her on the cardiovascular floor at Houston Medical Center.

And Zunino says she won't be the only new employee.

“They're still hiring on my floor and many other floors. They're still trying to get nurses, LPNs, RNs, Techs, HUCs, they're looking for everybody,” Zunino says.

The Department of Labor says health services is one of the fields that's adding jobs in the state, along with education, trade, transportation, utilities, construction, and leisure and hospitality.

A record 4.92 million people living in Georgia are employed. The amount of people working in the state is 5.1 million.

In the Warner Robins area, the unemployment rate is 4.2 percent, slightly lower than the state average.

And for new college graduates like Zunino, that is no surprise.

“There is a big need for nurses all over Georgia, but I know specifically at my hospital there is a need for nurses,” Zunino says simply.

It's one of the reasons she was able to go from the classroom to the exam room and join Georgia’s workforce.
