Georgia, South Carolina bicker over peach bragging rights

This week, Georgia and South Carolina got into a good-natured Twitter war over who produces the most peaches and who has the sweetest fruit.

In the heat of the summer, Georgia and South Carolina are trading good-hearted jabs over a seasonal treat.

South Carolina says they produce more peaches than we do, and Georgia fired back a tweet saying our fruit is three times as sweet.

You would expect Mark Sanchez to be biased -- he's the CEO of Lane Packing.

"We're the old guys on the block. We've been growing peaches for a long time and we do a great job and they do a good job over there, but they don't have Georgia peaches," he said with a smile.

Sanchez is all too familiar with Georgia and South Carolina trading trash talk over peaches.

"Georgia and South Carolina peach growers are what we call "friendly competitors" -- we both grow a lot of peaches, we both do a great job, and, of course, the Georgia peaches are sweeter and tastier and grow right here in Middle Georgia," Sanchez said.

Statistically speaking, we are small potatoes when it comes to peaches. California is the king of the hill, packing 541,000 tons a year, followed by South Carolina at about 100,000, and Georgia comes in third.

According to the Georgia Farm Bureau, we put out 30-40 tons of peaches a year.

Peaches are a small commodity in the overall agriculture pie.

All fruits and nuts, including peaches, bring in about $745 million a year to Georgia's economy.

So score one for South Carolina when it comes to quantity. Now for sweetness, we asked Melvin Self who has a roadside stand just off the interstate.

"Their peaches ain't sweet, because I've got some right here," he said.

Self says the red-bottomed ones are from Gamecock land, and the yellow ones are from the Peach State.

"South Carolina peaches aren't as sweet as Georgia peaches. A lot of customers come by and they want a sample of the peaches, and they'll get a hold of one of these yellow ones right here and they'll say it's real sweet," he said.

"No, it's all about the flavor -- you know, you don't eat numbers, you eat peaches, and the Georgia peaches have the unique combination of climate soil that produce the tastiest, juiciest peaches ever," Sanchez said.

One thing everybody can agree on -- peaches hit the spot in June and July.

According to the University of Georgia Extension Service, Macon County is the top producer when it comes to peaches, followed by Peach County, and then Taylor County statewide.
