Gottwals Books to donate 5,000 books to first graders in Central Georgia

In October, Gottwals will be donating books to first graders in Bibb, Peach and Houston Counties

During the month of October, Gottwals Book is donating about 5,000 copies of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," to first graders across Central Georgia.

13WMAZ's Junior Journalist Ellie Ruth Mullis spoke to owner Shane Gottwals about why this year's Halloween treat is reading.

One school Gottwals donated to was Central Fellowship Christian Academy in Macon. He says he got into books when he was a student there.

"Funny thing is, I actually went to school here at CFCA and was taught in these very classrooms, and this is where I got my love for reading," Gottwals said. "So yes, I absolutely loved reading, all through my young years."

Gottwals says he feels the community needs more books.

"In a lot of homes, maybe reading just isn't a part of what they do day-to-day, maybe they just don't have the money to have books at home, or even the families that do have books at home, getting another book gets them excited because it's another cool thing to read," Gottwals said.

He says he chose the first grade because that's when kids are starting to learn to read on their own, and his daughter was in the first grade last year.

"Everybody likes Charlie Brown, so we wanted to get it to all these little first graders and really spark their love for reading," Gottwals said.

The books will be going to all first graders in Bibb, Peach and Houston Counties, in both public and private schools.
