Here's how to handle all of your holiday trash

Here's how to get rid of all that garbage after you've ripped through your Christmas presents

KATHLEEN, Ga. — After all the excitement of opening up gifts Christmas morning, you may be trying to get rid of all the wrapping paper and boxes you have left over.

After being closed on Christmas Day, garbage disposal plants like Houston County's Solid Waste Diposal are back to their regular schedules.

Before you leave all of your trash on the curbside, make sure you know your county's guidelines for what can and cannot be picked up by trash crews.

"The holiday season brings a lot of extra paper, boxes, and bulky items that people buy at Christmas," Houston County Solid Waste Superintendent Terry Dietsch said. "We have an influx of homeowners and extra business during Christmas."

Diestch encourages homeowners to make it easier for pickup crews to collect all of their trash and keep waste under 50 pounds.

"Try to keep it as compact as can be," Dietsch said. "Bundle your trash stuff up. Make it easier for them to pick up."

Be sure to break down all boxes and keep trash tied down to prevent littering. If you want to dispose of large bulk waste like furniture in Houston County, you'll have to contact Advanced Disposal to set up an appointment.

Make sure to visit your county's solid waste department's guidelines on how to dispose of your trash.

Dietsch says that the Houston County landfill takes in over 200 tons of trash every year.

Houston and Macon-Bibb County's garbage disposal will both be closed on New Year's Day but will otherwise have their normal schedules.
