Houston County Schools looking for substitute teachers

The Houston County School District already has 600 substitutes in their pool, but they say they are always looking for more.

Students will return to the classroom in a few weeks, and Houston County schools are looking for substitute teachers.

Meara Lesho has been a substitute teacher in Houston County for the last two years.

"You have those tough days when you're in kindergarten and you're like, 'Oh, my gosh, I think I am going to fall, pass out, fall asleep right now,' and then you get those hugs and you're like, 'Oh, it's worth it,'" said Lesho.

Lesho is a certified teacher and she said subbing is a great way to be in the classroom but also have a flexible schedule.

"I would definitely encourage people to look into substitute teaching if they need some excitement in their life," Lesho said.

Tonya Maddox, the district's Director of Personnel, said they usually have a pool of around 600 substitute teachers, but they always need more.

"The thought of coming into a classroom, I know it may seem scary if you've never done that before, but it is so easy," said Maddox.

In comparison, the Bibb County School District currently has 851 active substitutes.

Maddox says substitute teaching is also a great way to get your foot in the door to get a classroom of your own.

Lesho said one of her favorite memories from subbing was her kindergarten class making crafts and writing her little notes telling her how much they would miss her over the summer.

"There was nothing more rewarding than getting these little love notes from my kiddos," she said.

Maddox said there are three ways to qualify for the job.

If you are already a certified teacher in the state of Georgia, you can just fill out the application online.

Another way to qualify is to have an associate degree or credit hours equal to that and then complete the substitute course with the Middle Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency.

The third option is to pass the paraprofessional assessment for Georgia and then take the sub class.

If you are interested in applying but haven't completed the substitute course, there will be a RESA workshop next Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Central Georgia Technical College in Macon.

The pay for substitute teachers ranges from $10 to $13 an hour and the application closes on July 26th.

Bibb County applications open on August 1st and will stay open indefinitely.

"I would say give it a try because it is so worth it," Maddox said.
