MACON, Ga. — Houston Food Market owner Raman Kumar considers his store the "chill spot" for people in the neighborhood.

Since it opened over a year ago, he says people have welcomed it with open arms. "I opened this store to help people so they don't have to go far away to go shopping, get groceries. You see a mini-market here with fresh meats -- they don't have to go to a Piggly Wiggly, they can just come here."

But Thursday night around 10:45 after the store was closed, someone shot 15-year-old D'Angelo Ross right outside. Kumar doesn't understand how things got out of hand.

"We never had any problems with anybody --  no stealing, no taking stuff away, nothing. I don't know why this happened, I hate this," he says.

The store owner says the teen is one of the many regulars in his store, and he often comes in with his grandmother.

"He comes here to buy chips and drinks and candies. He comes here every day, about 10 times a day," says Kumar.

And the same rings true for other teens in south Macon like Andre Hunter, a friend of Ross. "I just hope he's OK and he just gets through it," he says.

Both of them say D'Angelo Ross is known as a jokester and will be in everyone's prayers as he stays in the hospital.

Kumar is holding a candlelight vigil outside of his store at 7 p.m. Friday night. It will be at 4141 Houston Avenue.
