'I'm not sure how we are going to explain to the little ones:' Monroe County firefighter's home burns down

"He found it really odd to be on the receiving end of what he does daily in his life."

MACON, Ga. — A Monroe County firefighter and his family are recovering after flames blazed through their home. Corrine Comer remembers what her house looked like before a fire scorched it on Friday around noon. She found irony in that her husband Deane Comer is a firefighter in Monroe County.

"He found it really odd to be on the receiving end of what he does daily in his life," said Corrine Comer.

Shane Cook, Monroe County's Fire and EMS spokesperson, says they are still investigating what caused the fire. He says Comer's 12-year-old son was home when it happened.

"They transported him the the medical center for smoke inhalation but has since been transferred to the burn center in Augusta," said Captain Cook.

She called the house a home for about 15 years with her four children.

"I'm not sure how we are going to explain to the little ones, you know, about our house. We have to move forward for the kids," said Comer.

Comer says God and the community will make that process easier.

"Just the love that everybody's shown just means the world," said Comer.

The family is currently staying in a hotel. On Saturday and Sunday, Monroe County firefighters will be accepting donations for the family at a station in Juliette at 8037 Rivoli Road between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The family is asking for Visa and other gift card donations so the family can buy what they need.
