'It gets bigger and better every year': Macon hosts GHSA Team Duals Wrestling Finals

This weekend was the state championships for boys high school wrestling, and people showed up by the thousands to watch.

MACON, Ga. — The state championships for boys high school wrestling is in town. Thousands screamed their support for teams inside the Macon Centreplex on Saturday.

For Elizabeth Jarrett and the Chattooga Indians wrestling team, this weekend in Macon has been a ride.

"We've been cheering since we got here on Thursday. We have not stopped, I'm about to lose my voice," she said.

Chattooga County High School is one of dozens of schools who spent their time at the state's team dual finals. Only a handful, including the Indians, left with a new championship title.

GHSA associate director Don Corr says every year, high school wrestling continues to gain more popularity here in Georgia.

"It gets bigger and better every year. We added the girls last year, and we had girls championships, we're bringing that back again this year," said Corr.

Corr says the plan is to keep the championships here in Macon for two reasons.

"First it's centrally located for all our schools in the state of Georgia. Secondly, it's a venue we can put down 12 mats and have 12 matches going on at one time," he said.

The wrestling for this weekend may be over, but he says they'll be back for more next month.
