The lights on Poplar Street are in full swing, and some businesses in the area hope folks will wander into their front doors, bringing in a Christmas bonus.

Mike Seekins owns Famous Mike's and he may have to cook a little more this December thanks to the lights on Poplar event happening right outside his front door.

"It's going to be nothing but positivity," Seekins said. "Like I said, it's going to be exposure even if we don't get a lot of business from it, I think, but I think we all will feel the effect -- we all should see more business. I heard last year places like Just Tap'd were packed."

Decadent is the other business that just opened on Poplar.

Three more are slated to move in soon.

Patrick Polowichak says the lights will be a sweet treat for the holidays just with the sheer number of folks milling around in the area.

"Yeah, we're treating this as a grand opening based on the people they say are going to come in, the said 200,000 people through the month," he said. "It's a great opportunity to establish ourselves in Macon. It helped Oliver's last year and put them on the map, so getting the businesses along this strip is going to help develop downtown Macon into a better area. "

A better area that may be expanding.

"And the lofts going in everywhere, we're going to live upstairs -- another friend just moved into a loft on Poplar and a hotel's coming -- there is no doubt that this is the next booming side like Cherry Streets been for quite awhile," Seekins said.

The light show runs until January 4th.

The lights will be on every night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

They also plan to have snowblowers downtown and reindeer will stop in for a visit on December 22nd.
