'It's turning out deadly:' Uncle of murdered teen says violence is getting out of hand

Julian Kongquee, 18, appeared in court Tuesday after a shooting at Chick-fil-A left another teen dead on Monday

The latest teen to face a murder charge appeared in court on Tuesday.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-old Julian Kongquee allegedly shot and killed Leonard Spivey Jr. on Monday after an argument at the Chick-fil-A on Bloomfield Road.

The west Macon fast-food spot remained closed on Tuesday.

"It was devastating. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I lost my mom, better yet my nephew," said Kenneth Spivey, uncle to Leonard.

Kenneth says there are balloons and flowers on display for his mother, Ellen Sandifer, who was killed in her home less than two weeks ago.

No one has been charged in Sandifer's death.

"I can't imagine what his mom is going through because that was their baby. He might have been 18, but that was still their baby," said Kenneth.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says Kongquee contacted them around 3 p.m. on Monday, complaining that he hurt his elbow in a fight he had with Leonard.

It is not confirmed whether he mentioned the shooting.

Kongquee was later arrested a couple miles away.

Kenneth says his family believed his nephew was reporting for duty with the Air Force on Monday and they didn't know how he ended up at the Chick-Fil-A or how the argument started.

He says parents can avoid situations like these with training at home.

"If you see your child is on a misguided path, no matter how much you have given them the world, you have to do something to try to stop it," said Kenneth.

Kenneth says he believes his nephew and the suspect both grew up in good homes, but the teen violence is getting out of hand.

"These kids still for some strange reason keep resorting to try to live the way we had to live, when they don't have to. It's turning out deadly," said Kenneth.

Their family called Spivey a smart and athletic kid who graduated from Westside High School this year, but now they have to bury him.

Kongquee remains in the Bibb County jail without bond.

A commitment hearing for Kongquee is scheduled for September 18.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says his arrest makes six teens charged in a month with murder.
