My Teacher is Tops: Berta Hartzell

She's been teaching for 20 years, but this one is just a little bit different

This week's top teacher is in her 20th year as a teacher and her first year in 5th grade at John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville.

Berta Hartzell teaches fifth grade reading, U.S History, writing, and word Skills.

When asked what she loves most about teaching, a smile beamed across her face as she replied.

"Books! We love books, we love words and we love writing words, and adventures," Hartzell said.

She says they've been so many places, making the classroom seem as if it's not a classroom at all.

"We've been to so many neat places, we've climbed mountains," she explained.

Though she's been teaching for two decade, it's her first year in fifth grade, and she says it didn't take long for her to feel right at home.

"My kids here at John Milledge are family. They are everything, their families are everything, we are a community," Hartzell said.

Three of her students wrote in about Hartzell: Gracen Dixon, Jack Purvis, and Remington Weaver.

"When I first met Mrs. Hartzell, she was very nice to me and I knew that I was going to get good grades," Dixon said.

"When you think Mrs. Hartzell, you think reading. Reading is what she loves, along with her dog Hershey, her husband Randy, her son Josh who travels the world, and her older son Justin," Purvis and Weaver said.
