Kids learn to grow veggies, do yoga in summer camp

Children ages six to 11 learn about nutrition and ways to stay active this summer at Middle Georgia State University.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services says children spend more seven hours a day in front of a TV or computer screen.

There are plenty of ways for students to spend summer break. But instead of staying inside and playing video games, they can try a fitness camp.

Intern Elexis Buckner is studying healthcare administration at Middle Georgia State University.

She said Camp Fun N' Fit gives her a chance to kick it with children.

Buckner said there is no sitting around. She keeps the kids moving.

"I love kids and I like the workout, so I figured this was the perfect thing to try to do," Buckner said.

The four-week camp teaches children how to eat healthy.

Each camper, ages six to 11, get to plant their own vegetables in plastic cups.

"See there is a bunch of fun ways that you can eat fruits and vegetables, and a bunch of ways that you can make them good. They are not just eating broccoli," Buckner said.

After nutrition class, the students stretch out in yoga. They learn balance and flexibility.

Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. the campers are getting a full body workout.

"The campers can even look forward to bowling this week," Buckner said.

Camp Fun N' Fit sessions are from June 18-29 and July 9-20.

Parents can sign their children up for one or all four weeks.

Registration is $185 per week and covers field trips, classes, supplies, snacks and a t-shirt.
