Macon-Bibb to open shelter for evacuees tonight

The Emergency Operations Center will fully activate tomorrow and remain open through the duration of Michael

An evacuation shelter will be opening Tuesday night in Macon-Bibb County ahead of Hurricane Michael.

A news release from the county says the American Red Cross will be opening a shelter at the South Bibb Recreation Center at 7035 Houston Rd. around 6 p.m. Tuesday that can house 200 people.

The shelter will not be able to take in animals, so evacuees with pets can house their animals at Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare on Fulton Mill Road.

All recreation activities and programs at the center have been canceled until the shelter closes.

People should only call 911 for an emergency. All other calls should be at the EMA number at 478-832-6300.

The county is also asking people not to put their trash cans on the curb until the storm has passed.

Collection may be delayed, so if your garbage isn’t picked up as scheduled, your can should be left out on Friday.
