Macon-Bibb Traffic Engineering says traffic won't be an issue with new retail center

Bass Road sees about 11,000 cars throughout a 24-hour period, but Macon-Bibb Traffic Engineering says there should only be an increase of a couple hundred

A developer announced on Tuesday that Marshall's, Michael's and Old Navy are among the retailers headed to a new shopping center off Bass Road.

It’s not a secret Bass Road sees heavy traffic in the morning and evening.

One businesses owner has overlooked Bass Road every day for 13 years, and he says cars pile up.

“Blocked up between 3 and 4:30... I mean it’s bumper to bumper. It’s hard to get people in and out, my customers to come in and out," says Jim Welch, owner of Welch's Smokehouse.

But even with the new shopping center coming, Nigel Floyd with Macon-Bibb Traffic Engineering says traffic shouldn't be an issue.

“It won’t be a whole lot because those traffic volumes won’t be in the a.m. peak or in the p.m. peak. They’ll be during the mid-day and during normal business hours. The business owners won't see a whole lot of traffic generated during their peak hours," says Floyd.

Bass Road sees about 11,000 cars throughout a 24-hour period.

Floyd expects that number to rise by only a couple hundred with the shopping center.

Traffic Engineering says they are adding a left turning lane at the intersection of Bass Road and Bass Pro Shops, which will lead directly into the shopping center.

“We are excited about the development coming, it’s just the traffic flow. Getting the traffic in and out of here," says Welch.

Macon-Bibb County spokesperson, Chris Floore, says the county plans to use SPLOST money to add extra lanes to Bass Road and finish construction on the bridge within the next few years.
