Macon-Bibb welcome sign damaged from car accident

After a car wreck on June 14, the first impression you get of Bibb County when you're driving from Warner Robins is now an eye sore

MACON, Ga. —

Half of the sign that welcomed you into Macon-Bibb County from Warner Robins is now gone, leaving several wondering what happened.

The sign, located at the intersection of Highway 247 and Feagin Road, originally read “Macon Bibb-County, the Cherry Blossom Capital, welcomes you." Now, the sign reads "Con-Bibb County."

A report from the sheriff's office says the damage was caused by a driver who plowed into the sign on June 14. The driver was apparently speeding and lost control of his vehicle.

The sign is still half way down during the middle of tourist season.

"It’s summertime, and people are traveling and having vacation and coming to visit, so we want to look our very best," said Carolyn Crayton, the former executive director of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful and the founder of the Cherry Blossom Festival.

The signs were put in place by Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful when Crayton retired from her position with the organization. Crayton said it’s time for this sign along with other county welcome signs to get some TLC.

"Maybe we should take a little inventory and see what we can do to improve," Crayton said.

Macon-Bibb County is now sorting out which department will be the one to repair it.
