Macon college student makes 'blessings in a box' for students in need

Monica Robinson packs boxes full of college necessities for students in need. She calls them "blessings in a box."

As the school year steadily approaches, college students are preparing their essentials to go off to college, and one college student decided to help those who don't have a whole lot of extra money get the things they need.

Monica Robinson packs boxes full of college necessities for students in need. She calls them "blessings in a box."

"People can't afford to get those essentials, especially to put multiple kids through college at one time," says Robinson.

Robinson started the care packages a year ago and says people were grateful. "'You're such a miracle. It was just a blessing that I was able to find out about your project.'"

This year, she decided to expand her project and work with another organization called Macon-It to help students in need, but also highlight students in the community.

Care packages include toiletry items, planners, cleaning products, first-aid kits, and snacks.

They will join forces to host an event to distribute care packages to students in need and recognize students' academic achievements in the community.

Reginald Sams, a college student, comes from a family of eight kids. He says money ran tight before college, but thanks to projects like these, he didn't have to worry.

"It actually took away the stress and strain off my family because they have things in there that you would need," says Sams.

He says the people in these organizations relate in more ways than one.

"Just to be surrounded by a lot of people that not only are in your same situation but come from your same community, it makes you feel like, 'OK, if they can do it, then I can do because they faced the same challenges that I do.'"

The event will take place on July 21 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Lundy Chapel Baptist Church.
