Macon Mayhem announce a 5-year extension to stay at Centreplex

The team's original 5-year contract with the Macon Centreplex expires after this season

MACON, Ga. — Get ready for more Mayhem in Macon!

The SPHL hockey team that brought a championship to Macon announced a new five-year deal to stay in the Centreplex. The team made the announcement on social media Tuesday morning.

Owner Bob Kerzner brought his Southern Professional Hockey League team to town in 2015 after operating as the Augusta Riverhawks from 2010-2013.

The franchise captured the 2016 President's Cup in just its second year in Macon.

The team is offering its lowest ticket prices in franchise history as it works to sell out its home arena, the Centreplex, as the players work to make the playoffs.

Tickets for Saturday's Pack The 'Plex event are just $6 each. There are also discounted tickets available for Thursday night. College students get in for $10 with a valid ID. On Friday, the $10 deal is available for first responders.

According to statistics on the league web site, the Mayhem have averaged about 2,000 fans per game through its first four full seasons in Macon.

Macon has had three other hockey franchises. The original was the Macon Whoopees in the 1973-74 season, but that team quickly folded after poor attendance.

The Macon Whoopees came to town from 1996 until 2001 before going bankrupt. The Macon Trax then operated from 2002 to 2003.
