Macon-Bibb property tax appeals due

The Bibb County Tax Assessors' Office says Monday, June 24 is the last day to file an appeal if you think your property assessment is too high or too low

MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Tax Assessors' Office says Monday, June 24 is the last day to file an appeal if you think your property assessment is too high or too low.

Carl Fletcher says he's frustrated with Bibb County.

"I hope not to be living here that much longer," said Fletcher. 

He says his property value went up more than $5,000, but he hasn't made any changes to his home. This means he'd pay more in property taxes.

"No millage increase, but a property increase is basically the same thing disguised to get income," said Fletcher.

Fletcher lives in a north Macon subdivision called Springdale Woods. He says there's a vacant house next door, and they could use lights and a sidewalk.

"We're not getting any of the benefits of the taxes in north Macon," said Fletcher. 

Andrea Crutchfield, chief tax assessor, says estimated values for more than a thousands homes all over Macon have increased.

"If you are unhappy with your value, and you do not think your value is correct, you need to appeal," said Crutchfield. 

Crutchfield says the best way to prove your case is to compare your home to other homes recently sold in the area.

You can find that information on the tax assessors' website. You can type in your address and look up recent sales in your area. Make sure to look at home values with a similar size, condition, and age.

"I've already filed. They said someone will come out here in the next 30 days," said Fletcher.

Fletcher says he's hoping to convince the assessor in person they made a mistake.

Once they receive your appeal, the assessors' office looks at your neighborhood to decide if their assessment is fair. If they feel that it is, the next step is the Board of Equalization, who also has the ability to rule on your property value.
