Main Street Christmas Light Extravaganza comes to a close

After over a month of Christmas cheer, the downtown Macon light show has ended

MACON, Ga. — With the Main Street Christmas Light Extravaganza coming to an end, it looks like the holiday season is officially over. After January's First Friday festivities, the downtown light show will be taken down.

After spending nearly two months stringing up half a million lights down Poplar and Third streets, Bryan Nichols will now start taking all of them down on Saturday.

"It's always bittersweet when it comes to an end," says Nichols, who has spent three years working on the show. "To actually see it come to life and actually see people come from all over, you can't help but get excited."

This time around, Nichols brought new aspects to the extravaganza, including synchronized music, projectors, and interactive displays.

Next to the overall holiday spirit, Nichols enjoyed seeing people come from near and far to see the Christmas display.

"The thing I noticed more this year is how many people were from out of town," says Nichols. "One lady sent me a message and wanted coordinates for the live reindeer because she was coming from Florida."

The influx of people also brought a lot of business to downtown Macon restaurants and stores.

Now that he has a third Christmas show in the books, Nichols already has ideas for next year's show.

"We'll have some new songs and we'll have some new things for the kids to do next year," says Nichols. "And potentially something really big, but we'll just have to see."

Nichols says it typically takes him a month to get all of the lights down.
