Memorial for Vietnam veterans comes to Cordele

The Georgia Veterans State Park will be the home for a veterans memorial moving wall for three days.

Vietnam veterans are being remembered all week in Cordele. A moving wall memorial that is a replica of the one in Washington D.C. is in town for a few days.

About 150 motorcyclists escorted the moving wall memorial for Vietnam veterans. Chad Arnold, one of the riders, says it's an honor to be a part of something so special.

"It is kind of emotional. Like I said, with the community that's waving back at us and to think about all the loved one that's been lost," says Arnold.

Organizers posted flags around Georgia Veterans State Park along with a stand for the wall. The wall lists more than 58,000 names. The wall has been in central Georgia before when it came to Dublin in 2014. The park is expecting thousands of people to visit the memorial.

"Anytime that I can give back to veterans, that served for us to give us the freedom we have today, we always like to appear and show up and give back," said Arnold.

Activities Coordinator Amanda Norris says this can be a very emotional time for people, but they get a chance to bring a piece of the wall home with them.

"This is a chance to put your hand on the wall, get an etching of the name with a piece of paper, and share stories with other family members," said Norris.

The park has a veterans monument nearby that veterans can also take a look at. Arnold says some of the other bikers are veterans. He says they are thankful to be able to connect with those who are living and those who've been laid to rest.

"It's the camaraderie and the people getting together to support the communities," said Arnold.

The opening ceremony is Friday, August 31. The closing ceremony is Sunday, September 2 at 2 p.m. Parking is $5.
