Milledgeville unveils sign in honor of former city councilman

Louis Huley marched with Martin Luther King Jr. during one of the Selma protest marches in 1965

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The city of Milledgeville honored former city council member Louis Huley on Monday with a sign dedication.

They unveiled a new sign in memory of his service as a councilman from 1992 to 2000.

He represented District 5 and was known as a social activist and supporter of education.

That included marching across the Edmund Pettis Bridge with Martin Luther King Jr. during one of the Selma civil rights marches in 1965.

He also served as president of Milledgeville’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference chapter for over 20 years.

Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan spoke about Huley’s accomplishments.

Among those in attendance were his family members and his wife, Mary Huley, who says his name will live on forever.

“It's something that I can share with my grandchildren and my great-great grandchildren and they can show it to their children and their friends. It’s just an honor,” she said.

The ceremony kicked off the city's Martin Luther King Day march along Wayne Street, which ended at Flag Chapel Baptist Church.
