Monroe County's emergency-management director is warning of dangerous conditions across the county due to Friday's flooding.

In a Facebook post, EMA director Matt Perry advised people that there were flooding problems on nearly every major roadway in the county.

"Folks, this is just the start of a very long Memorial day weekend," he wrote.

Some of the trouble spots, according to Perry:

  • Highway 83 south was blocked Friday morning at Vaughn Road due to a tree down. Although the road is now open, there is still lots of running water on the roadway.
  • Most of Martin Luther King Junior Drive is under water, from West Main street south, past the Hubbard Elementary and middle schools.
  • Tift College Drive is under water at the back gate to the Georgia Department of corrections campus, near Ingles.
  • I-75 South between mile marker 184 through town is at a crawl because of standing water just south of Highway 18. He wrote that the water is probably a foot to 2 feet deep moving across the interstate.
  • Highway 18 is blocked at Bobby Floyd Road, due to a large tree down.

Public safety officials are advising people to drive safely across Central Georgia throughout the weekend, but to especially watch for standing water in the roadways. Drivers should slow down to avoid hydroplaning and avoid driving into standing water.
