It happened around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon on Interstate 75 North near mile marker 192, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies stopped a silver 2007 Toyota Camry on I-75, and during the stop, they smelled marijuana in the car. The driver, 28-year-old Guadalupe Garcia, then sped away and deputies began to chase him. Both Garcia and the passenger were ejected from the car. Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene. The unidentified passenger is listed as in critical condition at the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating this case.

Georgia Highway 42 was closed for several hours while the scene was processed by GSP.
