After two people were arrested for more than 500 counts of identity theft in Twiggs County Wednesday, 13WMAZ wanted to give you some tips to make sure your mailbox doesn't become the next target for thieves.
On rural roads, mailboxes are close to the roads and far from homes, making it easier for people to sneak by and take your mail.
After multiple mail thefts on their street over the years, the Thomas family decided to make a purchase for postal protection.
The Thomas family invested in a mailbox with a lock on it. So if someone tries to come and steal their mail, they can't get in.
"It's so convenient. You know your mail is safe and everything," said the Thomas family.
They said it's inexpensive, easy to install and easy to use.
Some other options for protecting your mail include:
- Hand your outgoing mail to a letter carrier in person
- Don't leave it in your mailbox overnight
- If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.
"It's been a real life saver for us and a comfort because we don't have to worry about that when we're not here. We know it's going to be in there when we get back," the Thomas family said.
The United States Postal Service also advises that you should call right away to stop service if your address changes or if you go out of town.
