Reward $25K | Police search for suspects after scientist killed in Brookhaven shooting last year

Dr. Matthew Willson was found with a single gunshot to the head, police said.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Nearly a year and a half after a scientist visiting Brookhaven was shot to death, police are asking the public for new leads in the case.

Brookhaven Police Department investigators continue to look into the circumstances of Dr. Matthew Willson's shooting death. The 31-year-old was visiting from England when he was shot and killed while lying in bed on January 16, 2022.

During the initial investigation, police said the deadly shooting appeared to be the result of someone recklessly discharging a gun. Several people called 911 around 2 a.m. about the gunfire coming from apartments by the 3600 block of Buford Highway. As officers investigated the gunshots coming from that area, dispatch received another call about a man, later identified as Willson, shot in an apartment along Clairmont Road.

Willson was found with a single gunshot to the head, police said.

He was in town visiting loved ones at the time. Now his friends and family are pledging additional funds toward the reward for information that leads to an arrest.

There is now $25,000 available for anyone who can help bring Willson's family closure. Tips can be submitted through Atlanta Crime Stoppers by calling 404-577-TIPS (8477).
