Rutland High School pays tribute to Pike County player Dylan Thomas

After the death of Pike County football player Dylan Thomas, the Rutland High School football team honors before a game.

It's been almost a week since the death of Pike County football player Dylan Thomas. Friday, his team was back on the field to play Rutland High School. The mighty Hurricanes paid tribute to Thomas' memory at the Ed Defore Sports Complex.

Everyone prayed for comfort Friday night before the Pike County Pirates played the mighty hurricanes.

Coach Mark Daniel of Rutland High School's football team was emotional before the game thinking of Dylan Thomas' parents.

"I can't imagine what parents go through. I just think about when my kids were young and playing," said Daniel.

His team signed a jersey with Thomas' number on it and wore the number 32 on the back of their helmets. All coaches shared that sentiment on the sidelines with their shirts. Before kickoff, both teams walked on the field to shake hands with Thomas' jersey in hand. A sea of red filled the stands.

"Tonight, it was amazing to see their cheerleaders bring over a beautiful wreath for our family, of Dylan and our friends and our community," said Heather Coates.

Cheerleaders from both teams wore bows and fans wore t-shirts to show they were #Dylanstrong.

"As you can see we all have on our red to show our support for Dylan and our love for our support and community," said McKenzie Byrd.

The Rutland High School fans want Pike County to know they are there for them.

"Our hearts are so heavy and we ask you to just know you are not alone. You are not alone. We are there praying for you," said Karla Foreman.

Thomas' family is accepting donations at any United Bank location for the Dylan Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund.
