MACON, Ga. — Former Macon Mayoral Candidate Stanley Stewart and a group of veterans honored 9 heroes Wednesday who put their lives on the line to serve our country.
The goal of the Veterans Day event was to salute those who fought bravely in World War II, the Korean conflict, and Vietnam War, and remember those who are no longer with us.
"I had a great uncle who served in World War II. He was on the beaches on Normandy and he didn't talk about that a whole lot, but when he finally did, it was kind of a tearful thing for me because he said he never been so scared in his life. He said the bullets were flying and the men were dying, and he said he was just a scared poor boy from Jones County, and when you think about those individuals dating back to that era, I stand on their shoulders, you stand on their shoulders, and in my heart of hearts, I can't let them down," said Stewart.
