Satterfield's reopens dining room for the first time since ownership change

The nearly 40-year-old restaurant's dining room is back open after coming under new ownership in 2018

MACON, Ga. — One longtime Macon barbecue restaurant is reopening its dining room doors for the first time since coming under new ownership.

While you've been able to enjoy Satterfield's smoked brisket through take-out, you'll once again get to experience it inside the historic restaurant's walls.

Ben Hampton and his wife bought Satterfield's back in December 2018. He says they had to do a lot of work on the nearly 100-year-old building before they could launch back into a full operation.

"The project got pretty big, pretty quickly," Hampton said.

They focused on taking care of the smokehouse and doing catering and take out orders before they moved their attention to the dining room.

Recently, they passed all their inspections, and on Tuesday, the dining room officially reopened. Hampton says they're ecstatic.

"We just can't be happier, because we know that Macon and everyone's been wanting to come in and sit down, and come experience Satterfield's like they always have for the last, you know, almost 40 years," Hampton said. "And we're just beside ourselves that we can actually do that now."

Not only is the dining room reopened, but they're adding some new things to their traditional menu.

"We're taking our traditionally-smoked meats and just putting them on a different vessel for people to enjoy," Hampton said. "We're doing brisket banh mis... it's a Vietnamese sandwich, but we're putting our smoked brisket on it, which puts our little spin on it."

Hampton himself loves supporting 'mom and pop' shops and is proud to be one.

"We're not like a mainstream franchise, where we're just given a template for success, like it's my wife and I and our staff here... working hard every day to figure out how we can make this happen," Hampton said.

He says he's excited to bring Satterfield's to the Macon community for the next 40 years.

"I just hope that everyone can come down here and enjoy good barbecue," Hampton said. "And that like we're just known for that spot like, 'wow, that food's really good.'"

Once they get into the groove of things, Hampton says they're hoping to provide dinner services Thursdays through Saturdays, and maybe even brunch on Sundays.

They are looking for more servers and workers to help them out.

Satterfield's is located at 120 New Street in downtown Macon. They're open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
