School of the Week: Baldwin County believes in fine arts programs

Baldwin County has a state of the art auditorium for performances.

For the next month we are going to highlight schools of the week that are doing a super job in one aspect or another.

You might think fine arts in schools would take a back seat to academics and even athletics, but Baldwin County sees things differently.

The Baldwin County School System was one of six school systems across the state of Georgia to win the Best Communities for Music Education award.

Fine Arts director Anna Brock says it's easy to sell kids on art, dance and band.

"Kids have an innate desire to create; it's just built into who they are," she explained.

In Baldwin County, they can get creative in several different ways inside a classroom.

The system offers an extended array of fine arts classes.

"At the elementary level ,every student does take art and every student does take music," Brock said.

Brock says they've quadrupled their fine arts budget over the past few years and it's not to just give kids play time. The classes are paying off in other areas as well.

"Their behavior improves their grades, improve their attendance, and approves this is something that works," she said. "The students that are actively participating in our fine arts programs -- those are usually our star students."

The kids have bought in and now, even teenagers are attempting to tackle dance class.

"The kids surprised themselves a lot they don't realize they can do something until they've got someone there showing them how," she said with a smile.

Congratulations to Baldwin County Schools on being WMAZ's first "School of the Week" award winner.

Next week, we will make a stop in Houston County to honor our next winners.
