The Bibb Sheriff’s Office has released more details about Thursday's fatal accident.

It was reported to them that a semi-truck was disabled and stopped in the middle lane of I-475N around 10 a.m. Thursday. The driver got out and began working on it.

A passing Chevy Silverado driven by 20-year-old Brandon Hankinson parked in front of the trailer and Hankinson tried to help the truck driver.

A second semi-truck, driven by 37-year-old Lawrence Gross, was in the middle lane of I-475N and crashed into the disabled semi and Silverado.

Then another vehicle in the middle lane, a Honda Accord driven by 38-year-old Rikki Sharp, hit the trailer of the disabled semi.

The driver of the disabled semi died at the scene. He was identified as 61-year-old, George E. James, from Florence, South Carolina.

Gross and Sharp were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Hankinson was treated and released at the scene.


One person is dead after an accident involving four vehicles.

According to the Bibb Sheriff’s Office, it happened on I-475N between Thomaston Road and Zebulon Road.

Bibb Coroner Leon Jones says one person is dead at the scene of the accident.

Traffic is being diverted from I-475N and drivers are being asked to exit at the Eisenhower Parkway off-ramp. Once exiting Eisenhower, drivers can go east to I-75.

BSO says traffic is blocked entirely and GDOT says it’s not expected to be clear until at least noon.

The identity of the person killed has not been released yet.
