UPDATE: The name of the man killed Monday in a Crawford County sand mine has been released.
He is Richard Carl Anderson, 62, of Peach County.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Office is investigating a death of a man at a sand mine.
The 62-year-old victim fell into a machine at about 5:20 a.m. Monday at the Atlanta Sand & Supply Co. on Sand Pit Road, according to a sheriff's office news release.
"A male employee had fallen into a hopper which is a machine that they use to put sand in and its got a conveyor belt and all. So he had fallen into there," says Crawford County Sheriff, Lewis Walker.
After falling in, he was "engulfed by the sand," according to the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration.
"It was a lot of sand that did go in on him and everything was still intact with the body, so there wasn't anything that was dismembered," says Walker.
Deputy Coroner Robert Cody pronounced the victim dead at the scene, the news release states.
The U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration was notified and they are conducting their own investigation into this incident, the news release states.
The MSHA sent WMAZ the following statement Monday afternoon:
"[We] will conduct a full investigation into the facility, including interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence from the site of the accident, and examining any equipment that might have been in use at the time. Once the investigation is complete the MSHA will issue a report. It will detail the cause of the accident and any enforcement actions MSHA will take against the mine operator."
Walker says in the initial investigation it appears that this was an accidental death.
"This is the first reported incident since I've been here that we've had at the plant of this magnitude," says Walker.
According to the MSHA website, the Atlanta Sand and Supply Company mine has been in operation since 1903.
Monday afternoon the plant said they weren't ready to comment yet on the incident.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the victim's family.
His body is being sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
