UPDATE: Jay Towns appeared before a Telfair County magistrate judge Tuesday and was denied bond.

He's charged with murder and armed robbery in the deaths of Bud and June Runion. Investigators say the Runions were both shot in the head, according to autopsies conducted at the GBI Crime Lab.

13WMAZ spoke with several people in the community who don't think Towns could have acted alone. And his father agrees.

"There's somebody else had something to do with this crap too," he told reporters in the courthouse.

His brother Josh and mother Gwen believe he's innocent. "My son did not do this, he didn't do it," said his mother.

"I'd like to tell my brother that I love him, " said Josh.

The suspect's family also has a message for the Runions. " I'm sorry. If my son had something to do with it I'm sorry," said Towns' father.

"I'm sorry for their loss," said Josh. "If my brother had anything to do with it I'm sorry."

There's still no word on Towns' next court appearance.

Earlier arrest warrants for Jay Towns on other charges:

  • He allegedly denied to investigators that he owned a cell phone that was used to contact Bud and June Runion. At a news conference Monday, Telfair County Sheriff Chris Steverson declined to give details about Towns' alleged false statement to investigators.

  • Towns allegedly contacted the Runions about selling a vehicle that he did not own. The sheriff has already said that he did not believe Towns owned a '66 Mustang, but so far has declined to describe the fraud charge.

The couple reportedly traveled to Telfair County last Thursday to meet with someone about a classic used car.

They were not seen or heard from since.

Investigators found their car and two bodies on Monday.

Towns turned himself in to investigators on Monday.
