VERIFY: Are Instagram pictures of moldy food at Peach County High School real?

Some students started posting pictures on Instagram of food allegedly out of the cafeteria.

Some parents say they are disgusted with the food their children are being served at Peach County High School. This comes after some students took to Instagram to post pictures of their meals.

Now the Georgia Department of Public Health says they are investigating the cafeteria at the high school.

When the lunch bell rings at Peach County High School, Robbie Deguevara says her daughter usually opts not to eat.

“She would rather go hungry than eat the food there,” says Deguevara.

Crystal and Keith Puckett say their son is the same way.

“My son said he bit into a piece of chicken and it squirted,” says Keith.

But the parents say their kids are not alone.

“You can see a strip of cheese with mold growing down the center of it,” says Keith.

They showed me these pictures from an Instagram account called, “PCHS lunches.” The page features pictures of meals that are allegedly from the high school cafeteria.

“There’s an apple with a worm hole going through it,” says Crystal.

But were these pictures actually taken at the high school? We sat down with Matoshia Lewis, the Nutrition Director for Peach County Schools, and went through a few of the pictures with her, like this apple.

“I can’t take ownership of that because nobody ever came back and complained about an apple,” says Lewis.

Lewis says the picture is too close up to tell where it was taken, and she says a student could've brought it from home.

But what about these other pictures that show trays?

“That is a tray and it does look like a tray from Peach County,” says Lewis.

Lewis says several of the meals are ones they serve, so we verified that, yes, some of these pictures were taken of meals at Peach County High School.

However, Lewis says in some of the pictures with trays in them, like the one below, students may have altered the appearance of the food in the picture.

“I don’t know if the food was manipulated, but that's something that we just don't serve,” says Lewis.

According to state Department of Health records, Peach County High School's lunchroom received a 97 on its last health inspection and averaged 98 on seven inspections over the last two years.

The health department says they expect to have the results from this inspection as soon as Thursday.
