VERIFY: Can you be turned away from the polls?

13WMAZ set out to verify, can you be turned away if you haven't voted for two elections?

Tuesday, a woman called the 13WMAZ newsroom saying she was turned away from her polling place because she hadn't voted in the last two elections.

13WMAZ set out to verify, can you be turned away if you haven't voted for two elections?

Our sources are the Twiggs County Board of Elections and the Georgia Secretary of State's Office.

Rhonda Thomas says Tuesday she loaded her grandsons in the car, drove to the Dry Branch fire station, and waited in line for 20 minutes, only to be turned away.

"I just can't believe they wouldn't let me vote," said Thomas.

They did give her a new registration form, but it's too late for this election.

"She said if you don't vote two consecutive times, you have to re-register again," said Thomas.

Candice Broce, spokesperson for the Secretary of State's Office, says your registration goes through a process before it is canceled.

If you haven't voted or responded to election mail for three years, your registration becomes inactive.

Then, if you don't make contact or vote for 4 more years, your registration can be canceled.

So we verified -- legally, your voter registration can be canceled if you don't vote or respond to election mail for two election cycles.

The Twiggs County Board of Elections says if you haven't placed your vote in the last two elections, you would have needed to reapply for that registration before election day so your vote can count.

Thomas says she never got anything in the mail. "Was important to me this morning. I got turned away."

She wanted to cast her vote to ensure both of her grandsons' futures.

"How many more have they turned away for the same reason as me?" said Thomas.

If you want to check if you're registered to vote, the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page is a good tool.
