MACON, Ga. — Mike Phillips has walked through the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park grounds for over 30 years.

With a new trail opening to the public, he says he's looking to see more people walking with him in the afternoons.
"I think it's great, it's beautiful scenery along the river. I think it's a wonderful addition to Macon and it should, hopefully, bring a lot of people."
The new Walnut Creek Connector Trail connects the current Ocmulgee Heritage Trail along the river to the river trail in the park.
There's a slight detour you'll have to take for the next few months due to construction on the Otis Redding Memorial Bridge.
A few blocks away on Clinton Street, there's an entry point with a gate and two brick pillars.
With funding from the National Park Service, the trail is accessible for everyone, according to NewTown Macon's Emily Hopkins.
"We've been able to use those private funds to match a grant from the National Park Service, so that paved this entire Walnut Creek Connector Trail and made it ADA compliant."
The ribbon cutting for the trail will be Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m.
In the evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Bike Walk Macon will lead a "Trail-o-bration Bike Party," complete with information about how it's been completed and some of the history of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail.
